Affordable vs. High-End Beauty — Does It Matter?

One of the many things that amazes me about the beauty world is the extravagant variety of products there are on the market. From products priced in the hundreds, all the way down to $5/$10 products, how can you know which are best? We are constantly getting ads thrown at us from Instagram to television commercials, claiming that certain products can solve all our problems. It can be super confusing! Does more expensive really mean better? Are certain products all about the hype? Well I hope your lashes are glued on tight because I’m about to let you in on a little secret…in most instances, when you purchase an expensive product- you are likely paying for marketing! That’s right. A $20 cream can work just as well as a $100 one. Now, this is not ALWAYS the case and it definitely varies by instance, but it is important to know how to decipher excellent marketing from a genuinely good product. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Here is a list of 5 things to consider when picking a product:
  1. Desired results: The important thing to consider when purchasing cosmetics or skincare is what you actually WANT the product to do! If the cheaper product is offering what you need, then why not try it before dropping big bucks? There are PLENTY of hidden gems on the market.
  2. Check the reviews: Time and time again you’ll hear about a product over and over..buy it..try it…and then *sigh*….it is completely OVERHYPED. No shade intended (*cough cough..the Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup Melting Butter Cleanser*). A great way to prevent this is by taking the time to look at the reviews on multiple sights. I always check Ulta, Sephora, AND the company’s website to check reviews. Most of the time I see or hear about a product and desperately want to like it- whether it is because of the pretty packaging or genius marketing- but unfortunately it isn’t always worth the hype. I always imagine my experience with a product will be different then the 200 people saying it’s not worth the money, and that sometimes can be the case, but it usually is not. Since I have started paying attention to reviews, I am spending A LOT less on products that sit on my counter (while I stare at them in shame everyday wishing they would morph into a great product)…because they are too expensive to throw away, but not worth using. *Insert the post-purchase guilt*
  3. Consider the ingredients: “As Dr. Charlotte Birnbaum of Spring Street Dermatology in New York City explains, though, it’s not always the most expensive products that are the most scientifically proven to be effective—even if they contain “rarer” ingredients.” Before purchasing a product look at the ingredients, especially the active ones! Compare cheaper dupes to high end product and see if there is a huge difference. Usually, the less expensive products have very similar ingredients to high end skin products but have less concentration or potency. The best ingredient should always be at the top of the ingredient label.
  4. Are you paying for the packaging? Campaigns, pretty packaging, catchy names, bright colors, and influence from celebrities plays a huge role in the products that we assume are amazing, without even trying them. Think about it. If I say “Dior makeup,” whether or not you have actually tried their products, you will assume they are good because of the name. I recently almost fell into this trap. I wanted to purchase the Charlotte Tilbury Collagen Lip Bath Gloss because of the pretty heart shaped applicator and gold packaging, however when I read the reviews they were not up to my standards. This is not to say it isn’t a good product, but I know I could find a cheaper one that could work better.
  5. Focus on your skin: If you are planning to splurge on any makeup products, choose something that will be sitting on your skin- especially foundation. Splurging for a foundation that not only offers great coverage, but also skincare benefits will be worth it in the long run. That is not to say that there aren’t awesome drug store foundations (L’Oréal True Match will always be my one true love), but when it comes to dropping the big bucks on cosmetics, I would definitely reserve it for anything that is sitting on my skin all day.

Final Thoughts

Googling the best dupes for expensive products is a great way to snatch an awesome product at a fraction of the cost. In addition, it might take trial and error. Test out different brands and get to know your go-to’s.

I’ll leave you with one last thought.

At the end of the day, do what makes YOU happy. If you feel awesome buying and rocking a luxury skincare or makeup product, then go for it! If you feel great in that amazing drug store mascara, then do you boo! More importantly, do not worry about what anyone else thinks. Don’t purchase something to impress someone or fit in with the hype. Make decisions on your feelings alone and you can’t go wrong. And always remember, you’re gorgeous with or without a $20 or $100 product.

Thanks for taking a dive into the beauty world with me! As always, if you have any topic requests please let me know! Feel free to explore the website, check out my partnerships, and follow my social media pages. Stay beautiful, talk soon…xx

Glossier- Why Does Everyone Seem to be Falling Into the Gloss?

Who is Glossier?

Glossier. You have probably heard this name before. It is an extremely popular, up and coming cosmetics brand in America started by a woman named Emily Weiss. Its popularity is picking up unbelievable speed and it seems like Glossier is the new craze. Their products quickly become sold out minutes after launching online, with its only physical store being in NYC. What makes this brand so appealing? The simple answer is INSTAGRAM.

THE “MEDIUM” BEHIND THE MADNESS

Instagram played a HUGE role in bringing Glossier into the spotlight it is in. Without even clearly knowing what it was about, 15 million people followed the account. Glossier’s digital marketing strategy is ingenious. That is why this brand appeals so much to millennials, who seem to be constantly glued to their phone. All of their product launch announcements are made through social media, such as Instagram and Twitter. They post many pictures of makeup in a pastel color scheme, which is the brand’s trademark. Glossier has a great relationship with their customers and are constantly getting them involved with things such as polls. They also have a great customer service system and are eager to answer people’s questions and concerns. Choosing social media as the platform to release products and communicate with their customers is perfect for the target market of this brand, the internet generation. Everyone is constantly scrolling through Instagram so this was the PERFECT fit as a communication medium.

EMILY WEISS

Coincidently, Weiss started the Glossier journey on her blog “Into the Gloss” where she interviewed beauty gurus like Kim Kardashian and Bobbi Brown. The blog allowed women to share their experiences and different skincare and makeup products in the comments. The site now has 1.5 million views each month.

THE BRAND THAT CARES

It is clear that the people of Glossier want to show their clients that they care. Glossier forms a community with their customers, rather than be a far removed retailer. Glossier wants to get to know their customers instead of just “talk at them.” Weiss wanted Glossier to feel real and allow women to connect with each other. It also allows Weiss to get suggestions from her customers and allows her to grow her business.

BRAND IDENTITY

Another thing that sets Glossier apart from other makeup brands is its unique brand. Their signature shade of pink is easy to pick out in a crowd. They focus on images of women who are diverse and look quite natural with dewy glowing skin and minimal makeup, with the occasional pop of color. Weiss wants women to feel comfortable in their own skin, instead of using makeup as a mask. The use of pictures is important because it minimizes the “noise” of something like an email subscription, where you cannot get the real essence of the product. What is better than a picture to actually show you!

HERE TO STAY

Glossier is kicking competition and taking names and it does not seem to be stopping any time soon!

NOT JUST YOUR MOTHER’S BEAUTY BRAND

Clinique is a brand that seems to have been around forever. Its 3 step Skin Care System launched in 1968 and introduced the concept of skincare to women. It might seem like “old news” to a lot of people, but many people do not realize that Clinique might be “your mother’s beauty brand,” but that is what makes it so special! Brands like Clinique, Lancôme, Estée Lauder, and Elizabeth Arden are trustworthy and standbys for many people, however in today’s generation, people are trying new and smaller brands. Jane Lauder, whose grandmother founded Estée Lauder in 1946, now heads Clinique. She explained that the company cannot become complacent because there are dynamic brands coming after them, especially in the last three years, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, Glossier, and Kylie Cosmetics. Jane Lauder felt that they should not take for granted that people know Clinique’s story just because they have been around for a long time.

HERE TO STAY

In august of 2015 Estée Lauder and Clinique, which are sister companies, had seen single digit sales declines, especially in skincare products like moisturizers. However, regardless of this I do not think brands like Clinique or Estée Lauder are going anywhere anytime soon. As we all know, “vintage” things are always coming back into trend. Clinique is known for being good-quality makeup. It is simple, with no gimmicks or extravagance. They might not be huge in social media, but the brand still retains customers. Things like giving out plenty of samples keeps people interested. If someone orders a product, they get samples of other ones, so they keep buying. Clinique is makeup that will really work and is not just for show.  Many people’s first ever makeup product was from Clinique. It is a solid brand and this is spreading through the generations.

CREDIBLE CLINIQUE-LIKE AN OLD FRIEND

How did Clinique gain such credibility and trust from its customers? Establishing credibility involves three main things. The first is competence, or how you focus on actions and do your job well. The second is character which involved predictability and stability, values and ethics. The third is caring which involves the intention. Clinique is very focused on its customers benefit and is not looking to trick them with gimmicks and glitter. Their products are genuine and work, and people know it. They are also predictable and stable. Clinique has been around a long time and people swear by many of their products, especially the three step skin care set. With Clinique, you know what you are getting in terms of quality. Clinique is also caring and has good intentions. They want their customers to be happy with their products and they want to be able to help them. that is how Clinique became so credible. It is a long-time established brand and even though it is not all over social media or spoken about all the time, it is always there and people know it.

Stylist or BFF?-Why EQ is so Important in the Salon

Chit Chat

Have you ever wondered how people become so close with their hair stylist and often form a sense of loyalty and friendship with them? The other day I was in my hair salon waiting for my turn and I was observing a conversation between a stylist and their client. This stylist was asking questions and having a conversation with their client as if they knew them personally. It got me thinking and I soon realized I too have this relationship with my stylist without even knowing it. I tell her everything and she knows my family and friends. It is something about sitting in that chair that almost has magical qualities and makes you want to spill!

EQ

In a salon environment, having a personal connection with your clients is extremely important. I always hear people saying how they talk to their hair stylist like he or she is their best friend. Emotional intelligence, or EQ (emotional quotient), involves understanding emotions, managing emotions to serve goals, empathizing with others, and effectively handling relationships. If a business manager has high emotional intelligence, they are more effective at influencing others, overcoming conflict, showing leadership, collaborating in teams, and managing change (Cardon, 2018). These are all extremely important qualities to have when working and managing a salon. According to Joanne Magana, the national coordinator and director for business education for the Eufora Salon Owners Network, “A little effort spent on increasing your EQ tends to have a wide-ranging, positive impact on your life.”

FRIENDSHIP

In order for customers to feel comfortable with you, they must trust you. The first step to this is establishing a friendship with them. The stylists with the highest cliental often have high EQ. EQ contributes to one’s ability to communicate clearly and constructively, overcome nerves, gain courage to talk to someone about bad news, motivate team members to move towards a common goal, respond well to disappointment and failure, and more. Some ways to develop your EQ involve self-awareness, self-management, active listening, asking the right questions, avoiding the wrong questions, reading non-verbal communication, adapting to the learning styles of others, and relationship management (Cardon, 2018). For managers, increasing their employee’s emotional intelligence is extremely beneficial to success in the workplace. If their employees gain clients, it helps their business.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

A good way to do boost employees EQ is through a team exercise where 4 groups are formed. The groups are the “let’s do it,” “speculating,” “caring,” and “detail” group. Employees will find the group that best fits their style. Each group must answer 5 questions:

This will increase awareness about other people’s preferences and putting EQ into practice, which increases empathy and allows you to connect with clients and be successful!

The Ugly Side of Beauty: Difficult Conversations

When it comes to working in the beauty industry, it might seem like all fun and glamour, however this is not the case a lot of the time. No matter what job you do, you definitely have come across a customer or coworker that seems impossible to deal with. There are ways to deal with even the most difficult coworker without having to go to management.

https://youtu.be/exFpUunPoCY

There are a few principles when it comes to difficult conversations. For example, embrace difficult conversations, assume the best in others, adapt a learning stance, stay calm, find common ground, disagree diplomatically, and avoid exaggerations and either/or approaches. These strategies are extremely helpful when approaching difficult conversations. Some steps to take are:

  1. Start well/declare intent
  2. Listen
  3. Tell your story
  4. Create shared story

Here are some examples in action:

THE KNOW IT ALL

Take a salon for example. There are different people with different personalities fighting for clients and trying to prove their talent. For example, the “know it all.” Even when clients are there, they will tell you you’re wrong. In this case, you should take this person to the side and tell them you are appreciative of them trying to help, but that you can handle it on your own and prefer they do not correct you in front of clients. Instead of avoiding the conversation because it is uncomfortable, embrace it and assume that the person was just trying to help.

THE MESSY COWORKER

Approaching a messy coworker can be awkward and difficult. Instead of blaming the person and making it seem like an “attack,” start the conversation by explaining how you would hate if potential clients were turned off by the mess and did not want to be taken care of by them, when in reality they do great work. Explain how it makes the salon look unkempt and they could pull in more clients and make more money if they cleaned up. Listen to them and find out why they have trouble cleaning up and maybe you could help them in some way.

The BORROWER

It can be very annoying having someone constantly asking to borrow your things, such as hair scissors or products. Many of these things are very expensive and vital to daily operations. Instead of getting angry at the person, try explaining that you do not mind sharing once in a while if they forget their things, but that it can get in the way of completing your jobs. Provide them with information about where to get the products and help them out. This is a much nicer way to approach the situation and can even help the other person a lot.

CONFLICT = OPPORTUNITY

Instead of being afraid of difficult conversations, embrace them! They help you and your coworkers learn and grow, without having to involve management. There are always going to be people and conflict when it comes to work but using these tips can really help open and honest communication flow, allowing for a better work environment.

Costume Crunch-time! -Easy & Cheap DIY Costumes

It is almost that time again…the leaves are crunchy, the candy is flowing, and you are scrambling last minute for a costume! Yes, of course I am talking about Halloween! Halloween is my absolute favorite day of the year and I love dressing up, but let’s face it..it can be stressful. If you are in a crunch and need a last minute costume, or you just don’t want to go to the costume store and spend a fortune on something you’ll wear once, then keep reading! These are costumes that can be made from stuff you probably already have lying around or with things that are easily accessible and cheap. If you don’t want to rip/stain good clothes, Primark has really cheap options and check website’s clearance racks like Forever 21. These aren’t your basic last minute costumes so I promise…I won’t put a black cat on the list.

1: Morticia Adams: All you need is a black dress (preferably long). Put on some red lipstick and smoky eyeshadow and you’re pretty much done.

2: 80s Workout Model: All you need is some tights and a one piece bathing suit, a neon color would work best but any will do. Wear a long sleeve shirt, off the shoulder will fit the look, over the bathing suit. If you have leg warmers and a “sweat” headband, throw those on.

https://images.halloweencostumes.com/media/13/80s/update/opt/80s-workout-costume.jpg

3: Mad Scientist: Grab a plain white lab coat (could even be an old white button down). You can throw some marks on it to make it look dirty and used. A pair of goggles or glasses and rubber gloves are perfect accessories. If you can find a test tube fill it up with some water and green food coloring.

4: Kim Possible: This one is easy! Green pants and a black shirt is all you really need! Wear some black shoes, a thick belt (preferably brown), and black gloves and you’re set.

5: Scarecrow: For this one, a plaid shirt and some overalls will do. A straw hat and some boots will make this look come to life! Throw your hair in pigtail braids and plus, there’s plenty of easy scarecrow makeup tutorials online.

6: Broken doll: A fluffy and girly dress is the main part of this costume. Put your hair in pigtails and top it off with some bows. There are many easy makeup tutorials online for broken dolls.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8d/06/cd/8d06cdbf8449bbf76ea44fef58209478.jpg

7: Dead Bride or Bride of Chucky: Grab a white dress, one you can ruin. Add some “blood” or dirt on it and rip it up. Use white face makeup so you look ghostly. You can add a veil and some flowers and there you go! If your honey wants to dress up with you, let them grab a suit and do the same. This costume takes till death do you part to a whole new level. If you’re gong for the bride of chucky look add a black leather jacket and draw on her signature beauty mark and makeup.

8: M&M: Get a solid shirt (the color of one of the M&Ms) and tape an M to it.

9: Jim from the office: Jim gave us a lot of costume inspo!

1-This one is super easy. All you need is a blue button down, blue tie, and a name tag. Write “Dave” on the name tag. Boom…you’re a slacker!

2-Grab a white button down and black slacks. You could tape 3 black holes on your shirt and be “three hole punch.” Grab a mug as an accessory and you’re done.

3-Another idea…which is insanely easy…is writing “book” on your face (using your nostrils as the Os) and bam! You are Facebook! Thanks Jim!

10: Beetleguice (male or female): You’ll need a white button down, pinstripe coat, and pinstripe pants, however, if you’re really pressed for time and don’t have these handy..any black and white stripped t-shirt will do! Use some spray paint to make your hair green and use some white face makeup.

11: Men in Black Costume: You’ll need a black suit and white button down with black shades. I 100% DO NOT recommend carrying a fake gun of any kind, as this could be dangerous.

12: Old Married Couple: Throw your hair in a bun, grab a cane, glasses on a string, and a nightgown. Your honey can put on some khakis and a sweater vest. If you want to go all out get some silver hair spray and go to town!

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/91/64/26/9164263622d226657392ba4a5a1dc5eb.jpg

13: Rosie the Riveter: You’ll need a denim shirt, jeans, and a red bandana. Put on some red lipstick and take the signature picture!

14: Burglar: You need a black and white shirt, black pants, and a black mask. Draw a dollar sign on a white tote bag.

15: The Bachelor/Bachelorette: Dress up in a fancy dress or suit and get a bunch of roses!

Funny:

16: 50 Shades of Grey: Tape different grey paint charts to yourself.

17: Arthur: If you want to be funny, Arthur is the perfect costume. A yellow sweater or shirt, a white button down, and blue jeans is all you need. Throw on a pair of fake glasses (preferably round) and cut out some Arthur ears from construction paper. Tape these to a headband and you’re done!

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/5e/2c/9e/5e2c9e349a6eaf721219e696f592e493.jpg

18: Bob Ross and Painting: Grab a Bob Ross wig and wear an all denim shirt. Draw on a beard, draw a fake paint palette on cardboard, and grab a paint brush. Have your partner put on a black shirt with pictures of leaves, grass, or the sky taped to it.

19: Blessing in Disguise: Tape the word “blessing” to your shirt and grab one of those silly disguises where the nose, glasses, and moustache are all attached and you’re all set.

Own Your Space: 15 Cheap and Easy Ways to Spice Up Your Room!

8 Indoor Hobbies to Get You Through the Winter - The Everygirl | Neutral bedroom decor, Bedroom interior, Interior design bedroom

Ever since I was a kid I was constantly redecorating my room. People are constantly changing and going through phases, so why shouldn’t our room change with us? A person’s bedroom is a huge part of their daily life and mood. We sleep here, watch television, listen to music, hang with friends, relax, and much more; so it should be a place where we feel calm and happy! You want to create an environment that you look forward to spending time in after a long day.

If you are anything like me, you are changing up your room at LEAST once a year (usually more if I’m honest). This can get pretty expensive and let’s face it, most of us don’t have $500 to $1,000 to renovate a room every year. That is why I am going to share with you 15 tips that I have used in the past to help achieve a fresh new look in my room. Of course, you don’t have to do all of these things because that could get expensive, but doing a few will help you get the change you desire. Some of these might seem obvious but you would be surprised how many people haven’t painted their walls or bought a new bedspread in years!

  1. Fresh coat of paint: I usually paint my room once a year and it is honestly not as hard as it looks. Paint costs around $60 a can and that is usually all you need for a small to medium sized room. This changes the entire aura of the room! There are soft colors like pale green, lavender, and powder blue that are said to be calming and soothing, but I don’t follow these rules. I paint the walls whatever I feel like and my color scheme is always changing! I am a huge fan of accent walls, which is when one wall is either a different color from the rest or has a design on it. If you want to splurge, places like Urban Outfitters sell stick on wallpaper which can be perfect for an accent wall. Make sure you use blue tape to avoid getting paint on the ceiling (I learned this the hard way), use garbage bags as tarps and you are good to go! It seems scary but trust me, if I can do it you can do it.
  2. Buy a new bedspread: Whether it is a duvet cover, a new blanket, or an entire comforter/sheet set, change it up! This can add some life and style to your room! Try a fun pattern or bright colors! Urban Outfitters and American Eagle are my favorite places to get bedspreads from.
  3. Fun trinket dishes: This might seem small and insignificant but it is a really fun and useful way to add some personality to your room without breaking the bank! You would be surprised at how useful these fun little dishes are. They’re perfect for rings, scrunches, bobby pins, change, earrings or whatever small items you don’t want to lose. They come in so many different shapes, sizes, designs, and styles and are sold everywhere.
  4. New posters: Posters are a great way to add some personality to your room. You can opt for printable posters online or buy some prints (my favorite place for prints is Desenio and Urban Outfitters). You can frame them or just hang them as is.
  5. Change framed pictures: If you have pictures framed from your fifth birthday party in your room, maybe it’s time to switch. Of course, if these pictures still make you happy to look at then by all means keep them! I know there can be a lot of guilt about replacing relatives’ or friends’ pictures with new ones, but the pictures in your room should make you happy, so no need for guilt. An easy DIY picture collage is a great option. Paste some printed pictures or polaroids onto a piece of cardboard and hang it up! Simple as that.
  6. Declutter and reevaluate storage: If you can’t see the top of your dresser or that chair you have sitting in your room that is covered in clothes, it might be time to declutter. Party giveaways, trinkets, and souvenirs can take up a lot of space in your room, but it is hard to get rid of memories. Get a bin or a box and start a memory box! Put anything with meaning to you that you can’t part with into the box to free up some space on your counters. To optimize storage, try using vacuum-seal bags to store your off season clothes and take advantage of the space under your bed! Get creative. I always feel better with an organized room.
  7. Get a new lamp: This might seem silly, but there are some really cute and affordable lighting options out there! I got my lamps at WALMART! Yes, Walmart!! It could change the whole vibe of the room.
  8. Change the curtains: Most of us don’t pay attention to the curtains in our room but this plays a big role in the lighting and aura of the space. There are so many fun patterns, designs, and textures! Who says curtains have to be boring?
  9. Hang some fairy lights: Fairy lights are one of the easiest way to brighten up your room, plus they are super cheap. I get most of mine on Amazon. They come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. String them around your room, window, or even headboard.
  10. Refurbish old furniture: If your furniture is looking a bit crusty, a fresh coat of paint, polish, or wax can make a big difference. There’s tons of DIY videos on YouTube!
  11. New throw rug: A throw rug is a great way to add some warmth to your room. There’s plenty of colors, designs, and sizes to fit what is right for you.
  12. Add plants, candles, and air fresheners: Adding small decorations such as plants and candles is perfect, as long as you don’t leave the candles unattended or near curtains/paper! Plants add oxygen into the room, letting you breathe in clean air and increasing your mood. They’re also super cute! Succulents/cactuses are super easy to take care of and so adorable. Fun planters/pots are also a cute way to add life to your room. Candles and air fresheners are the perfect way to keep your room smelling fresh, just be careful what you leave around if you have pets, because a lot of plants and essential oils found in fresheners and diffusers are poisonous to animals.
  13. Move your furniture around: Sometimes the setup of our room becomes stale. Try arranging the furniture in a different way to create a different vibe. Look into hygge (check out the Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking) to see what should go where to optimize your comfortability and coziness.
  14. Get a fish: This is an obvious one; any living thing in your room will obviously bring life to it! A fish is a pretty easy pet to care for, just make sure it is done right! I have 2 female Beta fish in my room and I love watching them swim around and decorating their tank! However, it is important to remember fish still require maintenance, like water changes (Beta fish have special requirements when it comes to changing the water and it is never a good idea to do a full change, usually a quarter of the water gets changed once a week) and feeding (Beta fish get fed small amounts every other day because they are prone to bloating).
  15. Let in natural light and fresh air: During the day, it is important to allow for fresh air and natural light. Crack a window and open the curtains! It will leave you feeling refreshed.

Lips are one of the most noticeable features on our body, yet when it comes to caring for them, we often overlook it. It is super important to keep your lips healthy and hydrated to keep your pretty pout!

Protect Your Pout

There are many ways to keep your lips in tip top shape:

  • DRINK WATER! Hydrating our bodies is super beneficial to every aspect of our health, and our lips are no exception.
  • Use a scrub! We often exfoliate our face and bodies, but neglect our lips. Removing the dead skin cells from our lips is important to keep them looking plump and avoid cracks or peeling. You can make a DIY scrub at home or buy one. The best ingredient in a lip scrub is sugar because it is gentle, yet effective, and natural.
  • Massage your lips! This might seem weird but massaging your lips with oil for about five minutes will help increase blood flow and circulation, giving you a plumper, pinker pout.
  • Avoid licking and peeling your lips! It might feel good to lick, pick, or wet dry and cracked lips, but it actually has the reverse effect and dries the lips out more. Instead try using something like an oil or a balm to hydrate.
  • Use a lip mask! Face masks are the wave these days but few people use masks on their lips! Yes, lip masking is a thing! It will give your lips the deep hydration they need.
  • Apply a mask, balm, or oil before bed and in the morning! Our lips could be quit dry when we wake up so it’s important to moisturize them before applying any makeup. Removing any excess lipstick before bed is also very important!
  • Eat a balanced diet! What we eat affects every aspect of our health, including lip health. Yes, what we eat can actually help keep our lips hydrated! Eat foods that are high in essential healthy fats like coconut oil or walnuts. Iron, zinc, and B vitamins are also important when it comes to hydration.
  • Protect your lips from the sun and cold! The skin on our lips is very delicate, thin, and lacks melatonin which leaves our lips susceptible to damage from the sun. Using a lip balm with a broad spectrum SPF, which protects against UVA and UVB rays, of at least 15 can help. When it is cold out, cover your lips with a scarf and use humidifier in your room or house to keep the air moist and prevent your lips from drying out.
Can Your Balm Actually Be Drying Out Your Lips?

Traditional products such as Vaselline, or petroleum jelly, are commonly used on lips but it is not the best idea. Petroleum jelly seals our lips so moisture cannot escape. This may seem like a good thing, but since moisture cannot get out, that means it cannot get in either. Chapsticks like Burt’s Bees are also popular but they contain propolis, which many people are allergic too. If Burt’s Bees irritates your lips, obviously stop using it! Use a lip balm that is free of parabens and artificial flavors that can irritate the lips.

The 411 On Sunscreen

Frenemies

Sunscreen, our best friend and worst enemy. It can be so difficult to sort through and understand all of the information there is out there about this vital part of our skin care routine. In fact, most people neglect this step and do not understand the importance of protecting our skin from the sun’s harmful rays! I was the same way for a long time and felt that sunscreen was only for the beach, boy was I wrong. Today let’s sort it out so you can keep your skin as healthy as possible!

Let’s Talk About Rays Baby- UVA vs UVB

We all know that the sun gives off rays, and the most damaging to skin being ultraviolet. The two basic types of ultraviolet rays are UVA and UVB. These rays are both very dangerous, but what’s the difference? Well, UVB rays play the biggest role in causing skin cancers and causing sunburn. UVA rays also cause skin cancer, as well as premature aging, especially wrinkles and sun spots, due to their deep penetration into the skin. An easy way to remember this is A for aging and B for burning. Getting protection from both of these rays is very important.

What Type?

Most people don’t know there are three main types of sunscreen including mineral, physical, and chemical. Physical sunscreen protects from both types of rays but is more likely to rub off with sweat. Mineral sunscreen has zinc oxide and titanium oxide, which are very important in a sunscreen. Since these ingredients are natural, it is good for sensitive skin. Finally, chemical sunscreen is the most common but either absorbs UVB or UVA rays, mostly focusing on UVA. Chemical sunscreens can also be quit irritating.Basically, mineral sunscreen is the way to go because it is the most natural and protects from both types of rays!

What is Broad Spectrum?

We often hear the words broad spectrum being used when referring to sunscreen, but many don’t actually know what this means. Broad spectrum refers to sunscreen that protects against all types of both UVA and UVB rays. This protects skin from premature aging and cancer.

What SPF is the Right SPF?

SPF stands for “sun protecting factor” and can be very confusing. There are so many options and people usually pick up whatever they find. When it comes to SPF, 30 is the most common, protecting the skin from about 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 protects from about 98% of UVB rays, so it isn’t a big difference but every little bit helps. Anything under 30 is not the most effective. Making sure your sunscreen is reef-safe and non-toxic are also important factors when picking a sunscreen.

Reapply, Reapply, Reapply!

Putting on sunscreen before you leave the house is a must, but remember, it will not last all day. When it comes to SPF, if you are using 15, it will be active for 150 minutes. SPF 30 to 50 lasts about two hours. Even if the sunscreen claims to be waterproof, it needs to be reapplied. After about 40 minutes the water will start to break it down. Sunscreen can protect you from most of the sun’s rays, but it is not a complete shield, so taking other safety measures such as limiting the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight or wearing hats are helpful. You also need to remember to cover all of your exposed skin with a lot of sunscreen. You should apply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before leaving the house because it takes time to soak in. It is definitely not the product to skimp on! It is also important to remember that sunscreen expires, so check the expiration date before applying!

Cream vs Spray

Both cream and spray sunscreen work, however, applying spray correctly is a lot harder. When applying spray it is vital to remember not to breathe it in, which happens accidentally sometimes. The best way to apply spray is to put it on your hands and rub it on so it covers all of your body and gets rubbed in.

Body vs Face Sunscreen

Putting body sunscreen on your face is not a good idea, even though I used to do this all the time growing up. It can cause breakouts, whereas face sunscreens are lighter and absorb more easily. Using a facial sunscreen with white or green tea, like the Hoola face sunscreen, is good because they contain beneficial antioxidant components.

So What Should I Use?
